What Axial Seamount can teach us about predicting volcanic eruptions | Oregon Field Guide
Axial Seamount is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. It lies deep beneath the surface of the sea almost 300 miles west of the coast of Oregon. The "Oregon Field Guide" crew joined Oregon State University volcanologist, Bill Chadwick, and his team on a 2022 quest to discover what Axial can teach us about predicting volcanic eruptions elsewhere.
Chadwick, along with Scott Nooner, a professor of geophysics at University of North Carolina Wilmington forecast a 2015 Axial eruption about seven months in advance.
Half the people in the Pacific Northwest live within about 60 miles of an active volcano. Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Three Sisters, Mount St. Helens and Mount Shasta are all ...

Oregon had a goal to graduate all high school students by 2025. Why is that so hard?
Просмотров 2384 часа назад
Last week, we introduced you to OPB’s Class of 2025 project (www.opb.org/article/2024/06/10/evergreen-podcast-class-of-2025-education-schools-portland-oregon/) , where we are following a class of kindergarteners on their journey all the way through high school. The idea stems from a goal Oregon set more than a decade ago - a 100% high school graduation rate by 2025. As the Class of 2025 has gro...

Merlin Sheldrake, biologist and author of “Entangled Life,” loves getting down to ground level, to see the world from the mushroom’s perspective. “Soils are deep and complex places. Like when I walk around on the soil, I like to think of it like I'm walking on the surface of an ocean of land and that that ocean of land stretches down deep, deep underground and is full of life,” he says. Walking...

A window into the Class of 2025, and what keeps students from graduating
Просмотров 19121 час назад
Over a decade ago, former Oregon governor John Kitzhaber announced an aspirational goal to improve the state’s low-ranking high school graduation rate. His mission: a 100% graduation by 2025. If successful, Oregon would catapult its rock-bottom national ranking to the top. It was a very ambitious goal. And so back in 2012 - when ‘Call Me Maybe’ was the song you heard everywhere - OPB set out on...

    In some of the Native tribes the strongest of the warriors painted his hand black, and when they saw York entirely black they gave him god status while they were among the natives. One chief put York in his tent with multiple young maidens and posted guards so nobody would disturb them! This is the truth the white historians omit!!!!!

    All the other documentaries paint Harry Truman as some kind of drunken lunatic, but congratulations to OPB and those who made this for showing his true nature! He had made his decision knowing full well what could happen and he was not a lunatic, he was at peace with his decision as it could mean the end him being alone in what was supposed to be his and the love of his life's world. I find him awe inspiring!

    It’s concerning that no one in leadership seems to have a clear idea about how to meet this goal. It’s not easy, but the approach is simple: identify the barriers to graduation and spend/legislate on those issues. I imagine most of it comes down to social and financial support for the students and their families rather than improving curriculum or blanket increases to funding (although schools could always use for more funding pay teachers and staff better).

    • @Eowar

      I completely disagree with this definition of meaning. The diploma isn't supposed to be a prize or trophy; it's a certificate of competency. Rephrase the previous comment with some other competence marker, such as a driver's license, and we see it doesn't make logical sense.

    • @Eowar
      @Eowar 2 дня назад

      It is possible the initial comment was trying to make the argument that if (A) we remove all requirements to earning a diploma, then (B) everyone graduates, and obviously (C) it makes graduation meaningless. That's not the argument they made, but it is probably what they had in mind.
